  2. Introduction Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, UHMW) is a subset of the thermoplastic polyethylene. Also known as high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE), it has extremely long chains, with a molecular mass usually between 3.5 and 7.5 million amu. The longer chain serves to transfer load more effectively to the polymer backbone by strengthening intermolecular interactions.
  3. UHMWPE is a type of polyolefin. It is made up of extremely long chains of polyethylene, which all align in the same direction. It derives its strength largely from the length of each individual molecule (chain n Structure of UHMWPE, with n greater than 100,000
  4. Mechanical and Chemical Properties (UHMW) is a polymer designed with a unique combination of wear and corrosion resistance, low friction and impact resistance. UHMW is resistant to chemical attack and moisture absorption and retains its key physical properties at -30 UHMWPE is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic. It embodies all the characteristics of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with the added traits of being resistant to concentrated acids and alkalis, as well as numerous organic solvents.

  6. Production Methods UHMWPE is processed variously by compression moulding, ram extrusion, gel spinning, and sintering. In gel spinning a precisely heated gel (of a low concentration of UHMWPE in an oil) is extruded through a spinneret. The extrudate is drawn through the air, the oil extracted with a solvent which does not affect the UHMWPE, and then dried removing the solvent. The end-result is a fiber with a high degree of molecular orientation, and therefore exceptional tensile strength.

  10. Recycling Methods Clariter's technology transforms potential plastic waste into high-value, pure industrial products with a net negative carbon footprint. The three-stage process involves thermal cracking, in which the waste is converted into a wide range of hydrocarbons, followed by hydro-refining, in which impurities are removed, and naphthenic and paraffinic hydrocarbons are formed, before distillation and separation, with fractions distilled into three product families to then be blended for diverse applications by partners.
  11. Application of fibre wastes High resistance UHMW-PE, which is problematic to recycle, has now been successfully upcycled into pure, crude-free industrial feedstocks with applications such as cleaning agents, degreasers, paints and speciality wax.
