  1. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PORIFERA 1. They are probably considered as the oldest animal group. 2. They are commonly called sponges. 3. They are multicellular. 4. They do not have tissues or organs. 5. They are sessile or sedentary in nature. 6. Most of them are marine. 7. Their body has many holes or pores called ostia. 8. Their body structure is designed in such a way that water moves through the body, where it can filter out food and also absorb the dissolved oxygen, while eliminating waste material. 9. They do not have specialised digestive, nervous or circulatory system. 10. Body shape is variable. 11. They are asymmetrical, some are radially symmetrical. 12. They are diploblastic. 13. Asexual reproduction by budding and gemmule formation. 14. Sexual reproduction by production of ova and sperm. 15. Fertilization is internal.
